Charlotte Davis (2017) discussed professional accountability within the nursing profession and said, “Although our professional accountability allows us to celebrate our successes, it also demands that we be honest and forthcoming when an error or near miss occurs.”. Nursing is a vast and fast-paced career requiring many duties and responsibilities to be met. In our current world, with disease and illness worsening, a generation of nurses preparing to exit the workforce, and increasing demands, the pressure to complete all tasks on time seems daunting, and some days, impossible. Heeding Charlotte Davis’s advice to be honest allows us to own our humanness and demonstrate professional accountability by doing so.
For over two decades, the nursing profession has ranked as one of the top professions demonstrating honesty and ethics (American Nurses Association (ANA), 2015) which is why this case examining the actions of Nurse Lope and Nurse Jim is challenging. Many ethical provisions were broken in this scenario and were demonstrated by violating “…the affirmative duty to act to prevent harm” (provision 1.5, ANA, n.d.), allowing conflicting interests to inhibit safe practice (provision 2.2), a breach in transparency and honesty (provision 2.3), a violation of professional boundaries (provision 2.4), breaking safe practice guidelines and policies (provision 3.4), and failing to take action during a time of unethical and unsafe practice (provision 3.5). The listing of breached provisions in this scenario can continue, but the jest is: Nurse Lope should have declined to administer the medication because she did not remove the medication from the pyxis, the medication was not being administered in the correct time frame, and the administration did not meet the five rights of safe medication administration. If it were me in the situation, I would decline to administer the medications and advise Nurse Lope to document “missed dose” and notify the provider. If Nurse Lope failed to do this, I would escalate it to the necessary party and report it as a medication discrepancy.
